Oral Contraceptive from Your Pharmacist - Who is Eligible?

If you're a woman aged 18-49 and you've used your low-risk oral contraceptive pill continuously for the last two years as prescribed by a GP or nurse practitioner, a trained NSW pharmacists may be able to provide continuation of your contraception following a screening consultation.

The short answer

To be eligible for pharmacist continuation of the oral contraceptive pill, you must:

  • Be aged 18-49 years
  • Be using the pill for contraception
  • Have used a low-risk oral contraceptive pill continuously for the last two years as prescribed by a GP or nurse practitioner

The pharmacist will confirm your eligibility during the consultation.

Who is eligible?

The consultation takes place in a private consultation room.

Your pharmacist will:

  • Review your contraceptive history
  • Ask screening questions about your health
  • Discuss any changes since your contraception was originally prescribed
  • Check your blood pressure

If the service is appropriate under the NSW protocol, your contraception may be continued. If further medical review is needed, you'll be referred to your GP.

What happens in the consultation?

Contraceptive suitability can change over time.

The pharmacist needs to identify any factors that may require medical review, including:

  • Changes to your health
  • New medicines
  • Blood pressure changes
  • New symptoms that fall outside the protocol

These questions help determine whether continuation through the pharmacy service is appropriate.

Why does the pharmacist ask screening questions?

Book online or drop in during opening hours.

No GP appointment needed for many conditions.

Cost and timing

Can the pharmacist start me on the pill for the first time?

Pharmacist continuation services apply to eligible patients already using and approved oral contraceptive pill. If the service is not suitable for your circumstances, the pharmacist will explain the next steps.

Does it matter if my prescription has expired?

Eligibility is based on meeting the NSW service requirements, including continuous use of your prescribed contraception. The pharmacist will assess this during your consultation.

Will I still need to see my GP?

Yes. Pharmacist continuation services do not replace ongoing GP reviews. Regular medical reviews remain an important part of contraceptive care.
