Do I need a Doctor's referral for UTI treatment in NSW?

No. In NSW, women aged 18-65 with symptoms of an uncomplicated urinary tract infection can be assessed and treated directly by a trained pharmacist without a referral, prescription or GP appointment. It became a permanent service in June 2024.

The short answer

The NSW service covers women aged 18-65 who are not pregnant and whose symptoms suggest an uncomplicated bladder infection (cystitis), such as:

  • Burning or stinging when passing urine
  • Needing to urinate more often than usual
  • Urgent trips to the bathroom
  • Lower abdominal discomfort

These symptoms are commonly associated with uncomplicated UTIs and form part of the pharmacist assessment process.

Who is eligible?

In our private consultation room, the pharmacist follows the NSW clinical protocol by reviewing your symptoms, medical history, allergies and current medicines.

If treatment is appropriate under the protocol, medicine may be supplied during the consultation. You'll also receive advice about symptom management and when further medical review may be needed.

With your consent, a record of the consultation can be shared with your regular GP to support continuity of care.

What happens in the consultation?

Some symptoms require medical assessment rather than pharmacist treatment.

These include:

  • Fever or chills
  • Back or side pain
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Blood in the urine
  • Pregnancy
  • Recurrent urinary tract infections
  • Symptoms that fall outside of the NSW protocol

In these situations, the pharmacist will explain the reason for the referral and direct you to the most appropriate healthcare provider.

When will you be referred instead?

Book online or drop in during opening hours.

No GP appointment needed for many conditions.
