NSW Pharmacists can now provide care for several common skin conditions under approved treatment protocols. For eligible patients - this may mean receiving assessment and treatment advice without needing to wait for a GP appointment.
Pharmacist Treatment for Skin Conditions - Shingles, Eczema, Psoriasis and Impetigo
Trained NSW pharmacists can assess and treat eligible patients with shingles, mild-to-moderate eczema (atopic dermatitis), mild plaque psoriasis flare-ups and impetigo (school sores). If your symptoms meet the NSW protocol, treatment may be provided during the consultation. If they don't, the pharmacist will refer you to the most appropriate healthcare provider.
The short answer
Shingles is caused by reactivation of the chickenpox virus and typically appears as a painfl blistering rash on one side of the body.
Early assessment is important because treatment options may be more effective when started soon after symptoms develop.
If you suspect shingles, it's a good idea to seek advice promptly rather than waiting to see if the rash improves on its own.
Shingles - Why early assessment matters
Pharmacists can assess eligible patients aged 2-65 years who are experiencing a flare-up of mild-to-moderate eczema.
During the consultation, the pharmacist may discuss:
- Current symptoms
- Possible triggers
- Skincare routines
- Previously used treatments
If the condition falls within the NSW protocol, treatment may be supplied or recommended.
Eczema (atopic dermatits)
Adults aged 18 years and over experiencing a flare-up of previously diagnosed mild plaque psoriasis may be eligible for pharmacist assessment.
The pharmacist will review:
- Current symptoms
- Previous management
- Any changes since your last flare-up
If further medical review is needed, appropriate referral will be arranged.

Impetigo is a common bacterial skin infection that can affect both children and adults.
Under the NSW protocol, eligible children aged 2 years and over and adults may be assessed by a pharmacist.
The pharmacist will determine whether the presentation fits the approved treatment pathway and whether referral is required.

Consultations take place in a private consultation room.
Your pharmacist will review:
- Symptoms
- Medical history
- Current medicines
- Previous treatments
- Any signs that fall outside the protocol
If treatment is appropriate, it may be supplied during the consultation. If additional investigation or care is required, the pharmacist will explain the reason and provide a referral.
