Shingles and RSV Vaccines - Am I Eligible for Free?
You may be eligible for a funded shingles vaccine or RSV vaccine under the National Immunisation Program if you meet specific eligibility criteria. The shingles vaccines is funded for eligible older adults and certain immunocompromised individuals, while the RSV vaccine is funded for eligible older adults and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people within approved age groups.
The short answer
Shingles is caused by reactivation of the chickenpox virus and can result in a painful blistering rash.
Funded shingles vaccination is available for eligible groups under the National Immunisation Program, including:
- Adults aged 65 years and over
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50 years and over
- Eligible immunocompromised adults aged 18 years and over
The shingles vaccination schedule consists of two doses given at the recommended interval.
The shingles vaccine
Respiratory Synctial Virus (RSV) can cause significant illness in some older adults.
Funded RSV vaccination is available for eligible groups including:
- Adults aged 75 years and over
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 60 years and over

Booking your vaccination
Do I need a prescription for a shingles vaccine?
No. Eligible vaccinations can be administered through the pharmacy in accordance with current vaccination authorities and eligibility requirements.
Can I get vaccinated if I've previously had shingles?
Previous shingles infection does not automatically exclude you from future vaccination. Speak with our pharmacist about your individual circumstances.
