MedsCheck and Diabetes MedsCheck - A Free Medicines Check-Up

A MedsCheck is a government-funded consultation with a pharmacist that reviews your medicines and how they're being used. A Diabetes MedsCheck provides similar support for eligible people living with type 2 diabetes and includes discussion about diabetes medicines and monitoring devices.

The short answer

During a MedsCheck, you'll meet privately with a pharmacist to review:

  • Prescription medicines
  • Over-the-counter medicines
  • Vitamins and supplements
  • How and when medicines are taken
  • Questions or concerns about your treatment

The aim is to help you better understand your medicines and identify any issues that may need discussion with your GP.

What happens in a MedsCheck?

MedsChecks are available for eligible patients living in the community who use multiple medicines or may benefit from a structured medicines review.

Eligibility requirements apply and can change over time.

Our pharmacist can check whether you qualify before booking your appointment.

Who is eligible?

A Diabetes MedsCheck is designed for eligible people living with type 2 diabetes.

The consultation may include discussion about:

  • Diabetes medicines
  • Blood glucose monitoring
  • Monitoring devices
  • Medicine routines
  • Questions relating to diabetes treatment

It provides an opportunity to review how medicines fit into your overall diabetes management plan.

What is a Diabetes MedsCheck?

Medicine regimens can change over time due to:

  • New prescriptions
  • Hosptial admissions
  • Specialist appointments
  • Changes in health conditions

A structured review can help ensure you understand:

  • Why each medicine is prescribed
  • When medicines should be taken
  • How medicines fit into your daily routine
  • Any questions you may wish to discuss further with your healthcare team

Appointments are conducted privately within the pharmacy and typically take around 20-30 minutes.

Cost and timing

Does a MedsCheck cost anything?

For eligible patients, MedsChecks are funded through the Government program and provided at no charge.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can speak directly with our pharmacy team to discuss eligibility requirements and book an appointment.

Is a MedsCheck the same as a Home Medicines Review?

No. A MedsCheck is completed in the pharmacy, while a Home Medicines Review is arranged through your GP and conducted by an accredited pharmacist in your home.
